DEI in Action at Great Clips Hair Salons
The CEO of Carrington Consortium LLC, Patricia Bradley, trained more than one hundred employees of Team Sailing, Inc., a franchisee of Great Clips, on the importance of valuing diversity in the workplace. Diane Sinclair, the CEO of Team Sailing, Inc. understands that “We Are All Unique,” and strives to make this a critical part of her organizational culture.
During her training sessions, Patricia describes diversity as the montage of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact. When organizations embrace this description and turn words into action—positive change happens! Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are the buzz words of the day, but what exactly do they mean? For starters, these terms are more than the workforce demographic data reported to the EEOC, or the quotas organizations set to check the box as a “diverse” organization. DEI is an intentional act to create an environment where employees feel valued for their uniqueness, have the same opportunities for advancement, and feel empowered to contribute to organizational success. This is a goal that all organizations should strive for, but where do we begin? We must all start by acknowledging and taking action to remove our personal biases, and discovering our unconscious biases.
